Bike Taupo with PlaceMakers’ help

30 Aug 2013, Community & Sponsorship

Locals and tourists alike will have the chance to take advantage of PlaceMakers products and community commitment when they ride Taupo’s Great Lake Trail.

“PlaceMakers Taupo has been supporting Bike Taupo in its bid to provide an iconic destination mountain bike track in our region,” says branch operator Kerry Hudson. “We’ve supported them wherever possible and provided the materials they require – from timber and cement to nails and tools – for bridges, viewing platforms, support structures and much more.

“As a thank you, Bike Taupo named a popular track in Craters MTB Park after us – PlaceMakers Hammer & Nail.”

The Great Lake Trail, which starts 15 minutes west of Taupo, will be 93km and follow the western shore of the lake through native forest. Riders will have the option of riding the full trail over two to three days or using a water taxi for a range of shorter options. So far, approximately 33km has been constructed and the goal is to have it completed by mid-summer.

Kerry and his team are strong supporters of the project.

“The aim is to achieve what will be a fantastic cycling experience in a stunning part of the region, which is otherwise hard to access,” says Kerry. “There will be options for riders of all experience levels and it’s a great tourism opportunity for Taupo!”
