Driveway decisions

Customers not so keen on concrete or bitumen? JakMat’s system provides an alternative ground stabiliser for driveways, paths and tracks.

Want a driveway or path which is strong and stable while giving you the natural look of aggregate or grass? According to Jakaar Industries, its high-strength ground stabilisation system – JakMat – is a cost-effective, permeable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional concrete paving systems.

JakMat, produced in New Zealand from 100% recycled and recyclable plastic, offers two options for reinforcing aggregate or grassed surfaces. It allows customers to combine a pleasant natural aesthetic with the functional requirements of vehicle and pedestrian carrying areas.

“JakMat is very easy to handle because it’s light weight and easy to cut to size,” says business manager John Bradley. “Once laid, it reduces ongoing maintenance, retains material in place and provides a strong matrix which spreads loads, from vehicle or pedestrian traffic, evenly across its surface.”

JakMatGeocell is designed as a driveway and parking alternative, with an extremely hard-wearing ground stabilisation mat and a cupped cell structure to retain decorative aggregate in place and reduce top-up cost. It’s permeable, which allows water to pass through the aggregate or grass surface it contains.

“JakMatGeocell also reduces potholing and the creation of muddy surfaces due to the weight of vehicles,” says John. “Even in rainy weather!”

JakMatEnviro is designed as a flexible way to stabilise paths and tracks that can withstand significant foot traffic without high maintenancecosts and be laid over surfaces with slight variations or obstacles, such as tree roots or stones. With both products, the permeable mat reduces material refill cost as the material is held in place, not spreading over the adjacent lawn or other surfaces.

“We’ve had great feedback about JakMat from contractors and consumers for a variety of reasons,” says John.

“Landscaping and building contractors find it easy to transport and lay, providing them significant time and costs savings. With land prices continuing to increase, and homeowners living on smaller plots of land, the demand for natural ground surfaces is increasing.”
