Northland juniors tackle a ‘super-charged’ training session with the Blues

Tomarata Rugby Club’s keen young players were thrilled to tackle a “super-charged” training session with some of their idols on 3 July at the Unitec Campus in Auckland.

The Tomarata Under 11’s were treated to a practice run by Blues players Liaki Moli, Luke Brad, Jerome Kaino, Sam Prattley, Tom Murday, Albert Nikoro, Ma’a Nonu, Steven Luatua and Pita Ahki, thanks to a PlaceMakers in-store competition.

The juniors practised their punts and passes and received first hand tips about the game from the Blues. One of the coaches for the day, lock Liaki Moli, was in high spirits after running the young players through a series of drills.

“It’s great to have a kick around with the kids and see the young talent coming through,” says Moli. “We’re grateful to be able to give something back to our supporters by teaching these young guys a few skills.”

Blues player Albert Nikoro was also happy to be taking part.

“We really enjoy getting out and spending time with the younger members of the community, especially encouraging the next generation of rugby players,” he says. “We had an awesome time and it seems as though the kids did too!”

Tomarata Under 11’s player Josh was chuffed to meet one of his rugby idols.

“I really liked seeing Ma’a Nonu and learned a lot. I had a really good time.”

His teammate Cody agrees: “It was breathtaking and, like, awesome!”

The Super Rugby Skills Training day was made possible through PlaceMakers’ official Community Partnership with the Blues.

PlaceMakers brand engagement manager Maria Reinbergen said PlaceMakers is proud to support New Zealand rugby at both a professional and grassroots level.

“No matter what the age, rugby builds excitement and camaraderie like no other sport,” she says. “It’s great to see the young players learn from New Zealand’s top rugby players and everyone involved in the training session enjoying it.”
