What product certification means for builders

02 Mar 2026, PlaceMakers News, Placemakers Picks

Certainty matters at every stage of a build. From pricing a job through to securing building consent and completing construction, knowing the products used meet the New Zealand Building Code helps keep projects moving and protects professional reputation. Product certification plays an important role in providing that confidence

In New Zealand, CodeMark certification and product appraisals are two recognised pathways used to demonstrate compliance with the Building Code. While both are widely used across the industry, they function differently and can have a direct impact on how smoothly a project progresses through the consent process.

The difference between Codemark and product appraisals

CodeMark is a government-backed product certification scheme. When a product holds CodeMark certification, Building Consent Authorities (BCAs) must accept it as evidence of compliance with the Building Code. This means fewer questions during consent review and less risk of delays caused by requests for additional documentation.

Product appraisals, such as those issued by BRANZ, provide an independent technical assessment of a product or system. These appraisals are well respected and commonly used to support design and engineering decisions. However, acceptance is not guaranteed. BCAs may still request further evidence or supporting information before granting approval.

Why this matters on site

For builders, the difference often comes down to time and certainty. Products with CodeMark certification can help streamline the consent process, reduce back and forth with councils and provide confidence that the product has been independently assessed against Building Code requirements.

Product appraisals can be valuable in more complex builds or bespoke applications where additional technical detail is required. However, they can introduce variability depending on how a BCA interprets the information provided.

Mitek’s approach to certification

MiTek has chosen to prioritise CodeMark certification for key structural products used across residential and commercial builds. This decision is focused on supporting builders with a clear and reliable compliance pathway.

MiTek CodeMark-certified products are manufactured in New Zealand using locally sourced materials. This supports consistent quality, reliable supply and assurance that products are designed for local building conditions.

Choosing the right option for your build

Both CodeMark and product appraisals have a place in the New Zealand building industry. The right choice depends on the project type, the level of regulatory certainty required and the complexity of the build.

For builders focused on reducing consent risk and keeping projects on track, CodeMark-certified products offer a straightforward compliance solution. Understanding the difference allows you to make informed product choices and build with confidence from consent through to completion.
