Applications are now open for the 2026 Master Builders Apprentice of the Year competition, inviting carpentry apprentices from across New Zealand to test their skills and accelerate their careers
The competition welcomes apprentices of all ages, and entrants do not need to work for a Master Builder or be enrolled with a particular training provider to participate.
Beyond hands-on building ability, competitors are assessed across a broad range of skills including project management, business knowledge and presentation. Participants also gain the opportunity to connect with industry leaders, build relationships with other apprentices and further develop their careers.
All completed entries receive a gift pack, while the national winner will be awarded a $5,000 Career Advancement Grant and the use of a brand new ute for 12 months.
Entries close Sunday, 12 April 2026, with applications available at: https://www.apprenticeoftheyear.co.nz/
Spotlight on emerging talent
The competition has become an important platform for showcasing emerging talent in the building sector.
In 2025, regional competitions saw 97 apprentices put their skills to the test, with the top seven progressing to the national final in Auckland.
Finalists completed a practical challenge and an interview with judges to assess their technical skills and overall capability.
During the seven-hour practical challenge, competitors built 3m-long wooden trains from plywood and timber. Each train was custom designed and later donated to early childhood centres across Auckland.
The competition also included a 45-minute interview with judges, where apprentices demonstrated their project management, communication and problem-solving skills alongside their craftsmanship.
Waikato apprentice Josh Gullery took out the national title, with Caleb Stuart (Bay of Plenty and Central Plateau) finishing second and Jade Murray (Central North Island) placing third.
Master Builders chief executive Ankit Sharma said the competition highlighted the importance of building a strong pipeline of skilled tradespeople.
“It is great to see the high calibre of talent on display reflecting the dedication, skill, and pride apprentices bring to their work,” Sharma said. “Their achievements highlight the talent driving the future of New Zealand’s construction industry.”
