PlaceMakers new frame and truss plant is expected to increase capacity four-fold over its predecessor
PlaceMakers new frame and truss plant in Porirua, Wellington opened on 18 April and is starting to hit its straps feeding product into the lower North Island.
The new factory covers 2,000m2 and has four times as much capacity as the Kapiti plant it replaced.
Manager Dwayne Jackson said that the upgraded facility will enable his team to work much more efficiently.
“It’s a lot easier to work in such a large space, particularly when we’re trying to make it as safe as possible,” said Dwayne. “The size of the previous site restricted the amount of stock we could hold, and we could only work limited hours because of the area’s zoning.
“We’ve got a new saw, upgraded truss pressing equipment and overhead lifting gantries, which has helped us improve productivity. Now that we’re rolling, timber comes in one door and finished product goes out the other, which is exactly how it should be.”
The Porirua factory will supply builders in Wellington, Manawatu, Taranaki and Wairarapa.
Full team ahead
Dwayne said that despite the location change creating a longer commute for some of his staff, everyone has chosen to stay on board.
“I’m really lucky that they all decided to stay. We’ve got a fantastic team here and everybody put in a lot of hard work to make the change as smooth as possible, including taking on some additional hours over weekends.”
He said that the bigger space, upgraded equipment and new facilities have also helped boost morale.
“Everyone’s really excited to be working in the new factory and we’re all looking forward to seeing how we can improve the service to our customers now we’re that in a facility with so much more potential.”
