Industry changes in a nutshell (or a seminar)

20 Nov 2013, LBP & Regulation

PlaceMakers’ fifth round of skills maintenance seminars aims to keep builders up to date with the myriad of changes that have already taken place – and those potentially just around the corner.

The new presenter John Tait, who will be familiar to some of you as presenter of a number of seminars in the last skill maintenance series, brings years of varied building experience and a fresh perspective to PlaceMakers’ ongoing skills maintenance programme.

“Skills maintenance is about ensuring you’re aware of the industry changes that affect your work on a day-to-day basis and we’ll do our best to explain those in an easy-to-digest format,” says John.

Coming from a trade background, John holds a national diploma in construction management and has been in the industry for twenty years. He previously worked as a building inspector, a technical advisor for the Department of Building and Housing and even worked at PlaceMakers Evans Bay for seven years in the yard, panel store, hardware store and trade sales office.

John currently provides a range of building consultant services to owners and councils around the country and says he is looking forward to meeting attendees and helping them manage the significant changes still taking place in the construction industry.

Some of the aspects he’ll be focusing on include Building Act Amendment No 4, the Construction Contracts Act, the Earthquake Prone Building Policy, the Law Commission review of joint and several liability and a number of recent Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment guides such as the ‘Guidance on the use of Certificates of Work, Producer Statements and Design Features by Chartered Professional Engineers under the new Restricted Building Work regime’ and ‘External moisture – a guide to using the risk matrix’.

So, attend a seminar near you and build on the skills maintenance points you’ve been collecting by reading Under Construction.
