Placemakers team goes the distance

01 May 2014, Community & Sponsorship

New Plymouth support makes prize-winning plan a reality.

While not everyone dreams of battling excruciating cramps, exasperating hills and extreme heat, PlaceMakers New Plymouth customer Jason Williams and four friends were keen to do just that. Thanks to PlaceMakers and New Plymouth JV Steven Murray, the group’s dream of competing in the Wellington to Auckland Cycle Challenge became a reality – and an outstanding success!

“A lot of planning and money went into getting this opportunity off the ground and PlaceMakers’ help made it happen,” says Jason, who has been a customer for the past eight years.

“We travelled 800km, won the tour overall, the King of the Mountain prize, the 35-39 year-old category and came third in the Sprint race – all while sporting our sweet PlaceMakers kit.”

Jason says Steven’s backing also went above and beyond a regular sponsorship.

“Not only did he support us financially, he donated four days of his time to be part of our support crew!” says Jason.

Steven, who had no previous experience with cycling events, says he really enjoyed his time and was pleased to sponsor the team and the official event charity, Multiple Sclerosis New Zealand.

“It was really exciting and inspiring to see these athletes challenging themselves and raising money for such a worthwhile cause,” he says. “And of course, it was great to see PlaceMakers jerseys on the podium!”
