Sector prepares to ‘Fly the Flag’ for mental health

05 Sep 2025, In the community, PlaceMakers News

MATES in Construction is holding its Fly the Flag Week from 8-12 September to promote mental health awareness in the building industry

With the theme ‘Be the Voice of Hope’, this year’s campaign calls on tradies, contractors and site managers to show visible support for workers experiencing tough times and to encourage more open conversations about mental health.

According to MATES, one person working in construction dies by suicide every five days in New Zealand. The organisation says that raising an actual, physical flag provides a powerful, visible reminder that help is available and that no one needs to face challenges alone.

Toolbox talks, site events and awareness sessions will accompany the flag-raising, with workplaces encouraged to bring crews together for conversations that can break down stigma and connect people with support services.

Long-term support

MATES in Construction was established in New Zealand in 2019, adapting a successful Australian model to local industry conditions. The programme trains workers to spot the signs of mental distress, equips them to connect colleagues with support, and provides access to field officers, case managers and a 24/7 helpline.

The PlaceMakers Foundation became a partner of the organisation in 2021. Funding and in-store campaigns have helped extend the programme’s reach, while staff have also participated in awareness training and local fundraising activities.

Store teams have previously joined Fly the Flag Week, raising banners outside branches and holding events with customers to reinforce the message that mental health is as important as physical safety on site.

An industry at risk

Construction remains one of the sectors most affected by suicide in New Zealand, due to the combination of long hours, transient work, financial pressures and a culture of ‘toughing it out’, which can leave workers vulnerable.

By embedding trained ‘Connectors’ within crews and offering practical onsite support, MATES aims to normalise mental health conversations and create safer, more supportive workplaces.

Campaigns such as Fly the Flag provide a focal point for those efforts. ‘Be the Voice of Hope’ highlights the role that anyone in the industry can play by checking in with colleagues, encouraging openness and ensuring workers know where to find help.

How you can participate

Builders are being encouraged to take part in Fly the Flag 2025 in several ways by:

  • Raising a MATES flag at their site, depot or office.
  • Hosting a toolbox talk or morning tea focused on mental health.
  • Inviting a MATES Field Officer to speak with staff or run a training session.
  • Sharing photos of their support on social media with #FlyTheFlag25.
  • Contributing to fundraising activities that help MATES expand its training and support services.

Please reach out to your local Field Officer or let Mates knowinfo@mates.net.nz if you have an event in mind.
