One Base Fishing Comp the catch of the year!
01 May 2014, Community & Sponsorship
What’s on Whitianga’s back doorstep? Plenty of fish by the looks of it!
PlaceMakers customers are hardier than most – even the impending Cyclone Lusi didn’t keep 420 avid anglers from making the trek to Whitianga to try and catch ‘the big one’!
“Our 11th annual One Base Fishing Competition was another great success, attracting anglers from Clarence Street, Te Rapa, Huntly, Morrinsville, Te Kuiti, Thames, Whitianga and Pukekohe!” says PlaceMakers Thames branch operator John McGill.

“While the weather wasn’t great, those who attended were keen as ever and more than 100 boats took to the water to snag snapper, kahawai, kingfish and tuna.”
The upgraded Whitianga Wharf Boat Ramp made launching and retrieving boats easier than ever and Cyclone Lusi held off long enough to give all the participants one full day on the water before heading into the Mercury Bay club for an impressive prize giving.
“Winners in each category took home some flash new fishing gear and there were also a number of great spot prizes, including Best Dressed,” says John.
“We even raffled off a $1,200 Shimano Tiagra Rod & Reel, raising $3,066 for the Whitianga Lions Club.
“This is the largest customer event outside the PlaceMakers LIFT programme and it was great to see so many of our valued customers enjoying it. However, it wouldn’t be possible without the support of our suppliers – most notably Wattyl, which has been the main sponsor for the past two years. I hope to see everyone again next year!”
