Inside NZCB’s Apprentice Network

23 Jan 2026, PlaceMakers News

For apprentices stepping onto a building site for the first time, the path to becoming a qualified builder can be as rewarding as it is challenging. That’s where the New Zealand Certified Builders (NZCB) Apprentice Network comes in

The Apprentice Network is a free community and professional support system aimed at helping emerging tradies thrive from day one of their apprenticeship.

Apprentices who join the network receive access to an organised community where apprentices can connect with their peers, learn from experienced tradespeople and access structured learning and support opportunities that go beyond on-the-job training. Members automatically receive NZCB Trainee Member status, unlocking access to networking events, workshops and other development resources designed to complement their formal training.

The network is designed to enable a range of activities, including leadership camps, regional meet-ups, site tours and social events that build camaraderie and practical insight among apprentices at all stages of their journeys. It also offers learning support covering essentials such as numeracy, literacy, business basics and health and safety – areas that often sit outside standard carpentry courses but are vital for long-term career success.

A key element of the Apprentice Network is mentorship and guidance. Members gain opportunities to connect with senior apprentices, experienced mentors and even high-school students interested in entering the trade, strengthening knowledge transfer across generations of builders. While on-site supervisors focus on daily tasks and performance, mentorship through the network emphasises personal development, workplace confidence and long-term career navigation – a distinction known to improve retention and resilience among apprentices.

Complementing this support is access to wellbeing services, including mental health support and practical resources that help apprentices navigate the demands of the job while balancing personal challenges. These wraparound services help address industry-wide challenges such as attrition and workplace stress – critical factors in retaining skilled talent in construction.

The network also links apprentices with benefits such as deals on tools and services relevant to their trade, and preferential entry to major events such as NZCB’s annual Apprentice Challenge and Conference & Expo.

Spotlight on the Apprentice Challenge

Among the calendar of activities in the Apprentice Network, one event consistently stands out as a flagship moment for apprenticeship excellence – the NZCB Apprentice Challenge. Now in its sixteenth year, the Apprentice Challenge brings together top apprentices from across New Zealand to compete in a practical build that tests carpentry skill, leadership and community engagement.

Held in partnership with industry leaders including BCITO, this year’s competition begins with regional heats on 18 April 2026, culminating in a national final at NZCB’s Conference & Expo on June 5th and 6th 2026. Entrants have the chance to elevate their profiles, meet industry professionals and build for purpose – as each year’s project is donated to a local community group or organisation, reinforcing the value of giving back through trade skill.

Nationwide support

In recent years, partnerships such as the PlaceMakers Apprentice Crew (PAC) have added further value to apprentices’ experience. PAC is a support programme offering perks such as starter packs, updated discounts and learning resources designed to help tradespeople get a strong start on site – resources that dovetail with NZCB’s aim of empowering apprentices through practical support and connection.
